If you’re someone on Medicare who travels a lot or spends more than a couple of weeks away from home at a time, it’s important to know how your Medicare works when you’re outside the U.S. In almost every case, your Medicare coverage will help cover you in an emergency, but it’s always on a reimbursement basis. That means you’ll need to pay the bills upfront, save every itemized receipt, and then file to get reimbursed later.

If you’re planning to be gone more than two weeks, I usually recommend looking into a travel insurance plan (IMG is a favorite of mine). It can save you a lot of stress and money if something unexpected happens while you’re away.

Now, this is something I help my clients figure out all the time. What their Medicare (and any Medigap or Advantage plan they have) will actually cover overseas, how to handle reimbursements, and whether a separate travel plan makes sense. If you’ve got a trip coming up, or just want some unbiased Medicare help to make sure you're in the best plan for you, feel free to reach out to me at 615‑579‑7592 or via email at

joel@wellnessinsurance.info and I’ll make sure you're in the best plan available to you. And remember, my assistance comes at no cost to you!
