Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily designed for individuals aged 65 and older, as well as younger individuals who qualify due to specific disabilities or conditions such as end-stage renal disease. Medicare coverage is segmented into different parts, each addressing distinct areas of healthcare:

  • Part A (Hospital Insurance) covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health care.

  • Part B (Medical Insurance) covers outpatient care, preventive services, doctor visits, and certain home health care.

  • Part C (Medicare Advantage Plans) offers an alternative to Original Medicare, provided by private companies approved by Medicare, and often includes additional benefits.

  • Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage) helps cover the cost of prescription medications.

Original Medicare (Parts A and B) provide foundational coverage but doesn’t include everything and should not be what you stay on alone. Options like Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policies help fill coverage gaps in Original Medicare and are crucial to protecting your finances while on Medicare.
